Eliot Werner

Running for:

Member of Town Board

I am proud to announce my candidacy for the Clinton Town Board. As a 25-year resident of this community, I have seen firsthand the challenges we face as well as the remarkable strength of our town. Clinton has always been a place where neighbors come together to support one another, and it’s that spirit of unity that I want to continue to bring to the Town Board.

My service to the Town began when I joined the Planning Board in 2001. I served two terms on the Planning Board before being elected to the Town Board in 2015. I was elected to a second term on the Town Board in 2021 and have served as deputy supervisor for the past four years. I served on the Zoning Revision Committee from 2013 to 2018 and am actively involved in our ongoing discussions about a new Zoning Law.

In addition to my work with the Town, I have held numerous appointed positions in community organizations. I served as a trustee (including nine years as treasurer) of the Clinton Historical Society from 2003 to 2014, a trustee of the Clinton Community Library from 2020 to 2021, and as custodian for the three Town-owned cemeteries since 2018.

As a Democrat, I believe in fairness, inclusivity, and sustainability. I am committed to listening to your concerns, advocating for responsible growth, and ensuring that Clinton remains a place where all of us can thrive. We deserve a town government that is transparent, accountable, and focused on our needs—whether that means improving our infrastructure, enhancing public safety, or supporting local businesses and schools.

If reelected, my priorities will continue to be:

  • Smart Growth: I will work to ensure that development in Clinton is sustainable and respects the unique character of our town. We can grow without compromising what makes Clinton special.

  • Environmental Stewardship: Climate change is real and Clinton must take steps to reduce its environmental impact. I will advocate for energy-efficient initiatives and green policies to protect our natural resources.

  • Community Connection: We must foster a more connected and engaged community. I will prioritize creating opportunities for dialogue and collaboration between town leaders and residents.

  • Fiscal Responsibility: As a taxpayer, I understand the importance of maintaining fiscal responsibility while still investing in our future. I will fight for smart budgeting that delivers value to residents and ensures a strong economic future.

I am committed to making Clinton a place where everyone feels heard, valued, and respected. Together we can build a town that not only preserves its history but also embraces the future with hope and optimism.

Thank you for your support. I look forward to serving you and working together to make Clinton the best it can be.

Candidates' Statement on Six Senses Development Project

We understand that issues like the Six Senses development project can spark strong feelings, and we deeply respect the passion and concern that residents bring to public discussions. When the Town Board considered issues related to the Six Senses application, we made our decision based on the fair and careful application of the laws currently in place. Our responsibility is to uphold those laws and, when needed, to review and amend them for the future.

At this stage, the Six Senses matter is being carefully reviewed by the Planning Board. While the Planning Board is appointed by the Town Board, it operates independently to ensure that the review process remains thorough and fair. The Planning Board has the authority to place restrictions on the project, and it welcomes input from the community on what those restrictions might be.

To give our residents the opportunity to thoughtfully consider the kind of development that best serves our town, the Town Board has also placed a six-month moratorium on new conference center and hotel projects. During this time, the Board will be reviewing the Zoning Code and will suggest revisions to align the hotel and conference center regulations more closely with Clinton’s needs. If revisions are adopted, those new laws will replace the existing regulations and provide clearer guidance for future development.
